The Power of Community Savings: Access to financial Institutions.

Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) are changing lives in many communities where JEDA works. Many people in rural areas do not have access to banks or other financial services. This makes it hard for them to save money, get loans, or start small businesses.

To help solve this problem, JEDA started VSLAs to help people save money together and support each other financially. In a VSLA, members meet every week or every two weeks to save small amounts of money into a common fund. From this fund, members can take loans to start or improve their businesses, pay school fees, buy farm inputs, or cover emergency costs.

One great success story is from a women’s group in Wakiso District. Before joining the VSLA, many of the women struggled to pay for their children’s school fees and daily needs. After joining, they started saving small amounts each week. With the loans they received, some women started small shops, others began tailoring businesses, and some invested in farming. Now, these women are able to earn more money and support their families better.

Another story is about a youth group that used their VSLA savings to start a brick-making project. The project became so successful that they now employ more young people in their community, helping to reduce unemployment and improve local incomes.

The VSLAs do not just help people financially. They also help build trust, teamwork, and confidence among members. People learn how to manage money, plan for the future, and work together for common goals.

Through VSLAs, JEDA is helping communities become stronger and more independent. We are proud to see how these small groups are making big changes in people’s lives. With continued support, we believe that even more people can benefit from the power of community savings.
